ABOUT US: SCIboston is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for individuals and families affected by spinal cord injury. Our mission is to Reach, Inspire, Support, and Empower individuals and families as they navigate life after spinal cord injury. Through peer mentoring, support groups, education, advocacy, community engagement, transition assistance, and financial support programs, SCIboston provides connection, resources, and opportunities that promote independence and quality of life. All programs and services are offered at no cost to participants. As SCIboston continues to grow its reach and impact throughout New England, we are investing in our development capacity to ensure the long-term sustainability and growth of our programs and services.

GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT: SCIboston is at an exciting stage of organizational growth and is investing in its development capacity to build a more strategic, diversified, and sustainable fundraising program. The Director of Development is a newly expanded leadership position that will play a key role in advancing SCIboston’s mission by bringing in direct revenue in the form of increased donations, grants, sponsorships, and indirectly through volunteer and donor engagement initiatives. This position will work closely with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to implement a strategic, sustainable development plan that strengthens community partnerships and expands SCIboston’s impact.

SCIboston currently operates with an annual budget of approximately $700,000 and has ambitious goals to grow and diversify philanthropic revenue over the next several years while ensuring the long-term sustainability of programs and services offered at no cost to the spinal cord injury community.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Fundraising & Donor Relations

  • Develop and implement strategic and innovative fundraising strategies to grow and diversify revenue, with a particular focus on individual giving, corporate partnerships, special events, and donor cultivation and stewardship.

  • Specific responsibility for this position will be to understand the network of individuals, families, and organizations connected to SCIboston and determine unique fundraising pathways and cultivation/stewardship plans.

  • Work with leadership to establish revenue goals for the following categories: individual, corporate, grants, and events.

  • Develop and manage a strategic donor pipeline to expand SCIboston’s donor base and strengthen long-term philanthropic support.

  • Develop and implement a corporate engagement strategy to identify, cultivate, and grow corporate partnerships.

  • Responsible for donor communications, including acknowledgment letters, impact updates, and annual appeals.

  • Support the Executive Director in building and maintaining relationships with major donors and key partners.

Event Development & Sponsorships

  • Coordinate sponsorship outreach and fulfillment in collaboration with the Executive Director for major annual events, including:

    • SCIboston Annual Gala

    • Travis Roy Legacy Wiffleball Tournament

    • NHL Foundation- Go Forward!

  • Develop sponsorship packets, pledge forms, and donor recognition materials in alignment. with SCIboston’s brand.

  • Assist in event revenue tracking, in-kind donations, and post-event stewardship.

Volunteer & Committee Engagement

  • Develop and implement a volunteer engagement strategy that supports SCIboston’s fundraising and developmental goals.

  • Recruit, engage, and support volunteers in meaningful opportunities that leverage their skills, relationships, and interests to advance SCIboston’s developmental efforts.

  • Recruit, coordinate, and support volunteers serving on event planning, sponsorship, and other fundraising committees, establishing clear roles and engaging members in sponsorship outreach, donor cultivation and opportunities to contribute to sponsorship outreach, donor cultivation and stewardship, event planning and other development initiatives.

Data & Administration

  • Maintain accurate donor and sponsor records in Salsa CRM.

  • Track giving trends and prepare monthly development reports for the Executive Director and Board.

  • Ensure compliance with donor acknowledgment, confidentiality, and reporting standards.

Communications & Outreach

  • Collaborate with SCIboston staff to ensure consistent donor messaging across newsletters, social media, and the website.

  • Collaborate with Executive Director to create SCIboston’s Annual Report and fundraising collateral.

  • Support storytelling efforts that highlight the impact of SCIboston’s programs and participants.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience preferred.

  • 3+ years of nonprofit fundraising or development experience

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience with CRM systems (Salsa, Salesforce, or similar).

  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.

  • Team player with a collaborative spirit and passion for SCIboston’s mission.

  • Event planning or sponsorship sales experience.

  • Candidate should have knowledge of spinal cord injury. This includes working with and/or advocating on behalf of individuals with SCI or personal experience with SCI.

  • Candidates must have a passion to make a significant, positive impact on the lives of those in the SCI community and be a self-starter.

  • Familiarity with disability advocacy or health-related nonprofits.

  • Ideally have knowledge of Greater Boston’s philanthropic and corporate community.

  • Provide own transportation to Boston and area communities.

  • Travel: Must be willing and able to travel to SCIboston events. Gala, TR24 Wiffleball Tournament, Go Forward! NHL Foundation events etc.

COMPENSATION/BENEFITS:

  • $60-75,000 annually; 30 hours per week
